Affligem Abbey Ale

- Beer Index -

The Benedictine monastery of Affligem in Belgium was founded in 1074. In earlier times, the monks brewed their own beer, but today Affligem is brewed under license by the De Smedt Brewery in Opwijk.

The Affligem line includes a range of strong ales with a Champagne-like second fermentation in corked bottles. Afflegem Blond Abby Ale is the weakest with a 6.5 -7.0 percent alcohol by volume. The Double is stronger and darker.

The fermentation of very strong beers can create fruity flavors, but Affligem's are also spiced with sweet orange peels, aniseed and caraway.
